Conspiracy Theory Time
In Waiting For God, Rimmer ponders "imagine making love to a woman", implying that he's never done so. But since then, it's been firmly established that he slept with Yvonne McGruder.
Therefore, McGRUDER IS A TRANNY.
If you ignore her having a baby in Last Human.

I don't think this is really a problem. I may be clutching at straws here, but I can say "Imagine England winning the world cup" despite the fact that England *apparently* won it many years previously. (Rugby doesn't count, btw).
Okay, so the reason the line is funny is becaus Rimmer has subconciously slipped up and revealed his virgin status. The obvious intention at the time it was written. And wtf, it's funny so who cares if later in the same series it's undemined?
I think it's much funnier that Rimmer isn't a virgin; he's just only had sex once and has a hideously detailed memory of the event.
Of course, then there's Sandra as mentioned in Marooned. Although in the books this is a lie so we might as well accept that it is there too.

In a similar vein, I've always wondered if there was a shift in transmission order for series II, because Rimmer says "Twice in one lifetime? I'm turning into Hugh Hefner!" in Better Than Life before his "One time only" revelation in Thanks For The Memory...

I always get the impression that Better Than Life was meant to be broadcast after Thanks For The Memory because of this line. Especially seeing as Lister and the Cat make such a big deal about the revelation in Memory but don't care about it in BTL. I think Memory was meant to be first with Kryten being third.
Also, Rimmer's father appearing in BTL as the Cat's fantasy has a lot more meaning if you've alrady seen Memory.

You know, I've never really thought of this - yet I've always noticed the "twice in one lifetime" gag in BTL
Oh for a full set of shooting scripts with filming dates.

Another slight flaw with the tranny idea is that she actually has several kids in BTL. Albeit within the game but still!

They could have adopted. I mean, it only took them a day to get them all :-p
Incidentally, I wonder if Rob and Doug had in mind what Rimmer's other kids would have been named. We know there's a "Julius", but what about the rest? Napoleon? Adolf? George? Alexander?

Maybe Genghis? and finally of course James.

Hey, it's Dwarf continuity. It's malleable.

He probably figures that sex with a virtual reality character doesn't count.

It reveals that the main studio shoot for BTL was still before TMTM. We don't know what order they were written in, though, which is perhaps the major point.
